In The Beginning

The idea for this book was conceived by Barbara Patterson when she needed a simple, graphic version of the creation story to read at a session called “Time Together” designed to stimulate interaction between mothers and their babies. She encouraged Lorna Livey, a professional artist helping with the sessions, to design and make such a book. Barbara provided the words based on various versions of the creation story found in the first book of the Bible.

Lorna enthusiastically took on the project because she wanted to make two of these books using her original artwork as special gifts for her grandson, Griffin, and soon to be born granddaughter, Ava.

The printmaking technique used, that of a blended or “rainbow” roll, proved to be ideal because of the simplicity of the image and the intense colour which resulted. The stencilled shapes also proved to be an effective way to create simple graphic shapes for babies to focus on.

The original two books were made at Lorna’s studio in the South Etobicoke area of Toronto during the early months of 2009.
